BlackerWood space reopened Sat 1 pm

Work has stopped in BlackerWood space and Robert Stanley, Senior project Manager has reopened the space for students. Unfortunately, he has been unable to turn on the ventilation in this area. If there are client concerns, he is aware and will be turning it on asap, most probably Monday morning. SR

Redpath Library construction, etc

from Lonnie on March 29, 2007

1. The area at street level of the Redpath Library Building
will be undergoing renovations. The ceiling tiles are to be replaced
from 8:00AM Friday, 30 March to 8:00 Saturday, March 31.
All the computers on that floor will be inaccessible and the area in the McLennan Library Building behind the elevators will be expected to absorb the extra use for authenticated McGill users.
Signs will be posted in that area.
I've asked Anté to disable the Guest login option to all computers in the McLennan area behind the elevators, except for the row of computers along the wall directly across the Info Desk, to the right of entrance to the Director's Office. They will retain the Guest login option.
This will assure access for McGill students only until the renovation work is completed.

2. The following is the OPENING/CLOSING for the basement door from the McLennan staircase leading to Teaching and Learning Services, GSLIS and Archives.
April 15 - April 29
Monday to Thursday Doors locked at 8:30 p.m.
Fridays Doors locked at 6:00 p.m.
Saturdays & Sundays CLOSED (Starting Sunday April 15).

April 30 - June 10
Monday to Thursday Doors locked at 8:30 p.m.
Fridays Doors locked at 6:00 p.m.
Saturdays OPENED at ll:30 a.m. CLOSED at 4:30 p.m.
Sundays CLOSED

3. Also, a reminder that we do not provide special guest accounts for non-McGill users with laptops.

New Chicago/Turabian Style Guide available

There's a new citation style guide on the Library website! KW's platonic version of the "Note + Bibliography" format (a.k.a. 'Humanities Style') of Chicago/Turabian Citation Style. No actual examples are given, just archetypes. Check it out at
http://www.mcgill.ca/files/library-assistance/ChicagoNBStyle2007.pdf
The companion "Parenthetical Reference" format was due out at the same time, but the announcement of a new edition of Turabian due in May 2007 has put that on hold, since all will probably have to be redone. Feedback from colleagues would be appreciated.

CREPUQ undergraduate borrowing cards

CREPUQ undergraduate borrowing cards

Since it is the time of year when students are scrambling to finish term papers and are competing with their fellow students to access the books they need, requests for the CREPUQ undergraduate card are increasing.

Please remember that in order to obtain the card:
1) the students must complete the application form at http://www.mcgill.ca/library-using/otherloans/crepuq/#CREPUQUNDER
2) they need to specify which books they want to borrow and from where
3) they CANNOT request titles already owned by McGill, even if these are currently out to another user.

Thanks,
Karen

Government Info - After Hours

If you could please place the Gov docs sources truck just inside the REF dept. doors When you close up for the evening, so that source material, if left near the info/ref desk, is not scattered about the library.

Amilcar is assembling the following cart to be left downstairs at the information desk over night until such time as all of the ECON 314 students have completed their assignments. The cart will be labelled with the list below and will be brought down at closing and collected in the mornings by the person who is opening for that day. Please note, however, that much of this information is available for nearly all of the years online via IMF, WDI, UNSTATS, etc (if students are still plugging away at 3am).

Library Ambassadors in the Stacks

The Ambassadors will start working in the stacks 6-9 pm weekdays as of tonight. I have asked them to stop by the desk to introduce themselves to you at the start of their shifts.

Signs will be placed in the elevators and at the desk to indicate that they are available to help on the third floor.

VCR in M6-37A (Viewing Room)

The VCR in the micro-room (M6.37A) has died and we are in the process of replacing it with a combo DVD/VCR unit.

As a temporary measure, another VCR will be installed until the new unit arrives, which we expect sometime next week.

Arts Legacy Research Paper

Hi! Yesterday was the deadline for Arts Legacy students to get their research paper proposal in to the instructors. In the next few weeks they will be writing the papers, which range all over the map as far as content goes. I have put together (yet) another ARLE resource guide: http://www.mcgill.ca/hssl/collections/links/course/arle104/

The students will soon have a link to it from their WebCT page, but that will probably be forgotten. Most of what they need in terms of periodical indexes should be found on this guide. The eclectic mix of factual reference works reflects the equally heterogeneous mix of lectures.

New Wilson Databases - Blue Forms

The blue pages for metalib indexing/categories should be done by the appropriate Liasons.
I suggest the following:

Biblio Index Plus = Karen N.
Bio Index = Cornelia
Book Review Digest = LW
Current Issues = MC
Play Index = LW
Short Story Index = LW
Art Museum and Image= Marilyn Berger

Alessandra will do the Greens so that it is done all at once and sent at the same time.

Blue pages require more "work".

If you have any comments, please send them on.
