MLIR Library Memberships

The McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement (MILR) - students are eligible for library memberships. We would like to make it easier for all of them by letting them obtain these memberships more of our locations (currently they have been restricted to the Humanities & Social Sciences Membership Desk for these.)

Attached is information about the process and a picture of the MILR ID that they have to present in order to obtain a membership.

If you have any questions about this, please let me know or anyone else on the Loans Advisory Committee (Louis Robertson, Chair; Sandra Emery, Peter Martinek, Brian McMillan, Amin Merani, Olga Wiseman.)

McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement (MILR)

The McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement (MILR) gives its students a McGill University ID number which entitles them to library borrowing privileges and access to the internet.
• MILR students must go to the computer centre on the 1st floor of Burnside Hall with their MILR Member’s Card to register for Internet access which allows them to use the McGill server for up to 13 hours per month.
For a McGill Library Membership card, students can apply at any Loans Desk at any McGill Library (except for Birks Reading Room, Edward Rosenthall Mathematics and Statistics Library, Islamic Studies Library, and Walter Hitschfeld Geographic Information Centre). They need to present a valid MILR ID card and a photo ID card with name and address. MILR ID cards are valid for one term and show the expiry date.

In Aleph when setting up a membership account for MILR students use :
• Patron status of 01 – undergraduate borrowing privileges
• Patron type of LR – MILR.

Mail room

I've had a few people come to the information desk trying to find the campus mailroom. The campus Mail Services website still lists their location as the McLennan building, but they are now located at 3465 Durocher. The phone number is still 514-398-4602.

The library mailroom is still in the Redpath basement (Steve Blais, x4771).

Minor paper jams in public printers

The library ITSOC, the committee which has replaced the former Joint Committee for Technology Support in Libraries (JTC), would like to remind all public services staff that the Service Agreement For the Provision of Support Services by Ancillary Services to the McGill Libraries http://www.library.mcgill.ca/lso/jtc/SLA_Ancillary_v1_0_April_6_2005.doc includes the following statement under paragraph 4.2 General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities of the Libraries:

· Encourage library staff to assist whenever possible in the clearing of minor paper jams. All major paper jams will be reported to Ancillary Services.

Klaus, Henry and the student navigation assistants have a key which allows to open the computer to clear paper jams. Please call the technician or student on duty instead of sending an e-mail to Ancillary. If you need to report a major problem to Ancillary support.ancillary@mcgill.ca please copy Klaus or Henry so they can keep track of the problems we are experiencing. Also inform them if paper jams are recurrent.

We should all know also the basics for troubleshooting the printers when the jobs are held because of incorrect paper size definition. If you don't know, please ask Klaus, Henry or myself to give you a brief explanation.

Thank you for your cooperation with ITSOC..

Auto Loans (Self Check-out) machine troubleshooting procedures

1. Morning staff and evening & weekend supervisors should verify that all machines are working properly at the beginning of their shift.

2. Check for printer problems by opening the top cover. Add a new roll of paper or fix any paper jams as required (instructions for installing the paper rolls can be found on the inside of the top cover).

3. If there are any other problems, open the bottom cabinet.

4. If Self Check-out machine is off (screen is blank) turn on the computer.

5. If Self Check-out machine is frozen or displays an error message reboot the computer:
 Turn the computer off and then on using then power button on the PC
 Or use the keyboard and try typing Ctrl-Alt-Del (simultaneously) and then select “Shut Down” and then “Restart”.

When machine restarts it should go directly into the Self Check program. You can confirm that the machine is working by borrowing a book.

6. If, despite all of the above, the machine does not work (or if there are other problems) please:
 Email ICS (support.ist@mcgill.ca) and cc: Jared Wiercinski (jared.wiercinski@mcgill.ca). Describe the problem and any error messages.
 Leave the machine on.
 Put an Out of Order sign on the machine. Please make a note on the sign that the problem has been reported, the date and time, and your initials.

Printing from a laptop

It is possible to print from a laptop PC in the library via the wireless network. Instructions are here: http://www.mcgill.ca/library-using/copying/
These instructions also appear in the library brochure called "Computers in the Library."

Confusion about this had arisen from an outdated page on the HSSL branch website that said it was not possible to print from a laptop. The page will be updated shortly.
