I just learned from Sharon Rankin in Rare Books that some serials that appear in the catalogue as available for consultation are in fact in closed storage. If the location says “Rare Books/Special Collections – Serials,” that means that the volume is actually in storage in the McLennan basement. Clients have to go to RBD and fill out a request card, and then the volume will be pulled for them to pick up later.
Here is an example: http://catalogue.mcgill.ca/F/?func=find-b&find_code=SYS&local_base=MGU01&request=000436083 (Journal title: Twentieth Century).
I’ve asked Sharon for more info about when (if?) the items’ statuses will be updated to reflect this. Right now it just looks as if they’re available for “immediate” consultation like regular RBD items.

Another note from Sharon:
The “by consultation” status for these items is in fact correct. Clients just might need to wait a bit longer for them than other materials.
