Faculty of Arts Students now have 24/7 access to the Arts Computer Lab on the third floor of the Ferrier Building (after hours access with their ID card by the card readers at the main campus entrance by the James Building and at the Dr. Penfield entrance) and have the same 24/7 access to a lounge we have created (with $$ support from AUS) in the same building on the second floor.
We also have created two study spaces -- again with $$ support from AUS -- in Leacock where the computer labs used to be housed. Leacock 111 is a large open area with tables and chairs; and Leacock 112 has what I refer to as "booths" (as in diners of old) and four tutorial rooms with sliding frosted glass doors: some privacy, but not too much. These rooms can be booked by TAs (weekly signup sheets on each door), but if they are not otherwise spoken for, any student -- or a very small group of students, 4 maximum, these areas are small -- can use them. These rooms are also open 24/7, again by card access after hours, to Arts Students. They seem to be very well used, for which we are particularly pleased. Unfortunately, no loos, due to the grills by the elevators protecting access to rest of the building.
We have also just opened up Leacock 114 for group meetings: at present there is an oval table, a couple of desks, and 5 chairs in there, but I am sure students could scrounge a chair or two more if need be. The decor leaves much to be desired (read: no windows and nothing on the walls), but, I will be printing up some retro posters to brighten it up a bit. This room will have to be booked through one of our monitors and will only be available when we have coverage which, at the moment, is 9:30am - 8:30pm Monday - Friday. (This could change due to availability during exams, but we will do our best to have as much coverage during those hours as possible.) Students will have to leave their ID card with the monitor while they are using the room as it is at the end of a corridor and has no other egress. The monitor sits immediately outside.
