Yo Saturday and Sunday People: As Lonnie tells us, when you go to lunch, forward the Info Desk phone to 4701 and tell the Loans staff that you're gone for an hour. However, when you close at 5:00, be sure to forward the phone to 8227, which is the voice mail. Don't just hit the forward button twice, as it will then forward to the last number it was instructed to use. The number 8227 is marked on the phone and the closing-up instructions.

Building heat
Hello Fellow Infernists,
To you who are suffering let me repeat some backgound info.
The cooling coils in the system are presently leaking or not operational. Work on the coils is being done during the evening (10pm to 6am) and will take 3-4 weeks to complete. During this time, at night the system will be off, and during the day the system will be on but there will be no cooling. When the work will be completed there should be a noticeable improvement in the cooling capabilities of your system for the summer months
They expect to have completed the work by 31 May. Relief is in sight.
Thanks for your patience.

Hi,
Some of you have asked me if we there is a list somewhere that would give us every e-journal archives that we have at McGill. In order to help you all manage your print serials collections here is where you can get the title lists for the different publishers:
- Blackwell Publishing:
http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Digitized_Backfiles.xls
- Elsevier ScienceDirect:
http://www.info.sciencedirect.com/content/journals/backfiles/
We are missing the Medicine Supplements I and II (Academic Press
Titles)
- Oxford U. Press:
http://www.oxfordjournals.org/access_purchase/complete_archive.html
- Springer:
http://www.springer.com/cda/content/document/cda_downloaddocument/master

Switch to Aleph 18 - from Jane
The testing of the new version of the Aleph software is going well, thanks to all our "Alephtesters"!
We are ready to meet our scheduled date for switching to Aleph 18 - the May long weekend.
On the weekend of May 5, the Systems Office, together with NCS and ISR, did a 'dry run' of all the upgrade steps to figure out how much time the full upgrade will take. Using that data, we have determined that we will need all of Sunday, May 20 to do the upgrade steps and then Monday, May 21 to test things on the production ports (e.g. the AutoLoans) before we go live on Aleph18.
On Sunday, May 20, Education, Life Sciences and Humanities and Social Sciences are the only libraries open for circulation; all loans will have to be done manually. The AutoLoans and the Library Catalogue similarly will not be available from early Sunday morning until the time on Monday when we go live on Aleph 18.
Monday, May 21, all libraries are closed - this will be our "testing day". The Catalogue will appear, and then at some point, disappear for a backup. Once the backup is done, the Catalogue will reappear, and Aleph 18 will be in production!
On Tuesday, staff will begin to do their work using Aleph18 - new clients will be deployed.
The website which documents the coming changes to the clients and to the Library Catalogue is: http://www.library.mcgill.ca/aleph/version18/whats_new_in_18.htm
If you wish to follow the upgrade process, the webpage to watch is: http://www.library.mcgill.ca/aleph/upgrade16

Finding items with K call numbers on the 3rd floor – McLennan Building - Humanities & Social Sciences Library
Until LC began to publish class K for law, a 50 year project finally completed in 2001, law books were assigned only the letter K (LC had announced that K would be law). The second line of the call number was the Cutter number for the author (or if no author, title).
The material is recognizable in the online catalogue by the existence of a space between the alpha digits.
For example:
K A2 1981 [Regular Loan] Humanities and Social Sciences McLennan Bldg
There are approximately 100 shelves of K call numbers on the 3rd floor. This material is shelved BEFORE the items with call numbers of the official LC “K” classification.
As each subclass of K was published, McGill started using it. The full LC classification schedule is now available and online at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco/lcco_k.pdf .
Subclass K (K followed by a number) is for a particular area or subject of law in general, without regard to a jurisdiction (country, etc.) Thus a general discussion of the law of contracts would be classed at K840.
Other subclasses follow, based on the country (always letters), subdivided by the subject. For example, the law of contracts in Canada would be classed at KE840, and the law of contracts in Quebec would be classed at KEQ390. (Note that the subject numbers are not always the same from jurisdiction to jurisdiction).
The last of the K subclasses is KZ for international law. A book on the law of treaties would be classed at KZ1301.
The rule for finding the material on the shelves is that “Nothing comes before something, and numbers come before letters.”
K
A2 1981
K 970
R47
2000
KE394
L38
1995
To find the item with the call number KB H64 L39 [Regular Loan] Humanities and Social Sciences McLennan Bldg, which has received an official LC “K” call number, it is first necessary to skip over the items on the 100+ shelves of K A2 through K Z1653.
In April 2007, the beginning of the official LC “K” call number range can be seen on the catalogue screen below.
The third entry on the call number browse index K10 O8715 - - Journal of Islamic and comparative law. -- is the beginning of the official LC “K” call numbers. All previous K numbers are incomplete, from the old way of assigning the books an interim law call number.

weekend info
A couple of things to mention:
- for the Saturday and Sunday staff at Info desk, a reminder to put up the sign indicating that you will be away from the desk until 00:00, and please remember to call Lending/Access to inform them that you are going for lunch and ask them what # you should be forwarding the phone to. Usually it's 4701.
- Facilities dept. is changing the duct/ventilation system. The lack of air circulation we are experiencing will continue until the first week in June. Work started shortly after exam time, the reasoning being that May was not too hot a period to do such work.

Donation procedures
Hi. It's approaching moving day in Montreal and we receive many calls from people who want to give us their books. We rarely want to accept what is on offer because 1)we usually have the material already, 2)we are out of space and 3)we have a cataloguing backlog of over 200,000 items. However, there is a file kept of such offers in the old collections office, so please refer any calls you receive at the reference desk about gifts to Nancy Crowe. Ditto for books offered at the ref desk. Refer them to Nancy. She will speak to the appropriate liaison librarian and they will decide whether or not to ask for a list and how to proceed.
Thanks,
Elaine

Already recognized for its expertise in the coverage of universities and education, Maclean's has extended that same reputation in this latest online presence - with the up-to-the-minute analysis, interactivity and points-of-view today's digital consumers are looking for. It's an essential resource for students and recent graduates looking to make educational decisions.

MCL Carrels - update from LW
Further to the carrel situation, carrels that were at the interior perimiters facing the stairwells have been removed to make room for additional badly-needed shelving. The carrels have been moved to the study areas of those floors. There will be the same number of carrels, displaced though they may be. This does not alter the web site info about the carrels and application for them. ( email from LW - May 4, 2007)

Post Office
Occasionally library users (students or tourists) ask for directions to the nearest post office. I had been directing them to the one on University, just south of St. Catherine. (I believe there is also a postal counter in a drugstore in Complexe Les Ailes but explaining how to get there can be complicated.) This post office has now moved to 800 Rene-Levesque, in an office tower beside the Queen Elizabeth hotel.

Air conditioning work in MCL/REDPATH
I have received the following information that the cooling coils will be replaced in the McLennan Redpath Library Buildings. This will no doubt cause some short term inconvenience but result in long term improvements to what has at times been a difficult situation.
Your understanding of some difficulties during the replacement period would be much appreciated. This will affect primarily those who work in the buildings but I am sending it to all staff so that those of you who visit the buildings will be aware of the work being undertaken.
email from J. Schmidt, May 2, 2007.

EZONE construction this summer
We are about to begin the construction of the new E-Zone on the street level of Redpath (S1). This wonderful new space will provide our students, researchers, faculty and staff with an architecturally designed environment that supports a new e-classroom, group study rooms and study booths, extensive laptop, computer and study space, a n assignment production area, comfortable lounge space and service desk.
Construction is scheduled to start in the middle of May and should be ready in September 2007.
The current Redpath S1 study/computer space will be closed beginning Thursday May 3rd at 8:00 am and will remain closed until we launch the new E-Zone.
Access to the compact shelving and stacks located in the basement level of Redpath (S2) will be provided through the central Redpath staircase only. Contractors will be working in the stack area of S2 over the summer. Access will occasionally be restricted to staff only. Closure dates will be posted in advance. We shall also be proceeding with the installation of additional compactus shelving in the lower Redpath basement, this project will be timed to work in with the other building work being undertaken. email from J.
